Parable of the Mustard Seed
Feb 6-14, 6–10 PM
Jesus used the mustard seed to illustrate how tiny things can grow into something great. If he told that story here, we think he’d use the Doug Fir.
Jesus said: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
The plant Jesus was talking about was around 15 feet tall, impressive in a desert environment. But if he was in Oregon, we imagine him holding a distinctive cone from a Doug Fir, gesturing to a towering 300-footer, hundreds of years old – a testament to strength and endurance. In tough times like these knowing our small efforts to help feed the hungry, shelter the houseless and comfort the distressed stand as a lasting testament to what we can do if we stick together.
