Facets and Small Matters

This piece explores the feel of resilience; to burn, not be destroyed, and to return; Facets and Small Matters is about what survives to be reborn.

Facets and Small Matters is a story of resilience—what survives, what transforms, what holds light even after burning. The foundation is charred wood: shou sugi ban, fire-treated until its surface cracks into a cellular pattern. The texture isn’t damage, it’s evidence of survival! The fingerprint of fire itself—a Voronoi pattern written in carbon, contains an advanced volumetric display. This Voronoi pattern repeats in the patterned cuts in the faces of the two flanking columns, each of which holds a highly-technical display element. The lessons: Sometimes, beauty and expression come from pain. Sometimes, what seems ruined can be redeemed. And just maybe, when we think something is over…maybe that’s not really the end, after all…
