TriMet, MAX and Streetcar
How Portland’s Transit Heroes Bring the Festival to Life
Every February, Portland comes alive with glowing sculptures, interactive installations, and thousands of people searching for magic in the winter dark. But behind the scenes—and often in plain sight—are the public transportation heroes who make the Festival not just possible, but accessible, joyful, and uniquely Portland.
TriMet, MAX, and Portland Streetcar do more than move people. They move the city itself. And during the Portland Winter Light Festival, they become part of the art, the experience, and the story.
A City That Moves Together
For nearly a decade, TriMet and Portland Streetcar have been trusted partners of the Portland Winter Light Festival—helping Portlanders get where they need to go safely and sustainably, without parking hassles, traffic stress, or cost barriers.
But their roles are bigger than transit; they are stewards of community, connection, and creativity.
Both partners share the Festival’s belief that light brings people together—whether it’s the glow of an installation or the glow of a MAX train pulling into a station filled with excited riders.
TriMet: Where Transit Becomes Art
TriMet has long been a catalyst for creativity in Portland. Murals along MAX lines, poetry from everyday riders, artists turning stations into canvases—TriMet’s world is already a gallery in motion.
“This event allows for artistic expression and imagination while giving a boost to downtown Portland’s economy. Plus, we’re happy to do the driving so people can get there stress-free,” TriMet shared.
Their commitment to the Winter Light Festival runs deep
- Nearly 10 years of partnership
- Safe, accessible, reliable transit directly to Festival sites
- A belief that inclusivity and community are central to Portland’s identity
“We strongly value inclusivity and community. We’re proud to deliver mobility options that are safe, convenient, reliable, accessible and welcoming to all.”
And then there are the unforgettable moments—like the 2025 light sculpture that transformed an ordinary bus into something extraordinary.
Artist @Hammer_Ad took a familiar TriMet bus and turned it into a glowing, interactive installation titled “I LOVE THE BUS.” It pulsed with light, delighting festival-goers and boldly reminding us that everyday transit can be art, too.
“Transit continues to inspire art that brings the city together,” TriMet said. “Whether it’s a bus stop turned into a painting, a MAX train sparking a photo series, or a late-night ride inspiring a new idea, TriMet is part of Portland’s creative landscape.”

Portland Streetcar: Lighting the Way Through the Central City
If TriMet brings the big expressive energy, Portland Streetcar brings the intimate, community-powered charm.
Running 18 hours a day through the heart of the city, the Streetcar doesn’t just reach Festival installations—it helps create them.
“Partnering with the Festival was a natural fit,” shared Andrew Plambeck, Public Affairs Manager for Portland Streetcar. “Supporting creative endeavors, community events, and local businesses is part of what we do.”
This year, once again, Portland Streetcar offers free rides throughout the Festival, making it easy—and fun—for families, artists, and adventurers to explore. Streetcar’s contributions shine in especially personal ways:
- Art on Board, a rolling exhibit showcasing local artists
- Mobile Music Fests featuring live performances on the move
- Even live stand-up comedy shows on the Streetcar
And then there’s the lighting. Each year, illuminated streetcars glide through the city, turning everyday commutes into radiant journeys. Portland Streetcar is finalizing this year’s lighting installation, promising something delightful in store.
Andrew shared one of his favorite Festival memories:
“I remember one year it was pouring rain and our streetcars were packed—but riders were all smiles, truly invigorated by the spirit of Winter Light.”
Or the kids who got to press the button that made a giant waterfront dragon breathe fire—an excitement that lasted far beyond the ride home
“I think the best is yet to come for Portland Streetcar’s Festival participation,” Andrew added.
When Public Transportation Sparks Wonder
Together, Portland Streetcar, TriMet, and the MAX help create a Festival that’s not just something to see—but something to move through.
They carry people to new discoveries, to unexpected conversations, to neighborhoods they haven’t visited in years. They make the Festival accessible for everyone, from kids seeing their first glowing sculpture to elders who rely on transit to join the fun.
They are, in every sense, co-creators of a city lit from within.
So this February, whether you’re bundling up for a cold night walk, planning a big multi-site adventure, or simply hopping on a Streetcar to see the lights…
Ride the glow. Ride the connection. Ride the magic.
Portland’s transit heroes will take you there.
