Within a Grain

‘Within a Grain’ explores how tiny elements shape vast systems, weaving light, memory, energy, and our role as both consumer and steward.

Salt is tiny made of minuscule crystals and grains yet it shapes worlds. A single grain preserves food and ancestral memory, erodes stone, powers ecosystems, and now stores the sun’s energy in molten batteries. This installation transforms the grain into an illuminated, refracting and reflected light, dynamic through cycles of charge and release. The work echoes blue-carbon marshes along Oregon’s coast, where plants and sediments store centuries of atmospheric carbon like living batteries. Mirrored panes fold the viewer into this continuum, revealing our reflection as both consumer and steward. Through light, ‘Within a Grain’ invites us inside the smallest crystal to witness how the tiniest presence can create vast impact.
