Rising Sunset

Linked together and tilted in opposing directions, Rising Sunset reminds us of the clearer days to come and the eternal cycle of day and night.

Winter in the Pacific Northwest when the skies turn gray and cloud the dynamic colors of the sunrise and sunset each day. Two interlocking rings made from CNC’d plywood, polycarbonate, colored rope, and nylon abstractly call back to the rising and setting suns. One ring painted in white with the colored rope in the warm tones of a new dawn, one ring painted black in the cool tones of evening twilight. By using brightly colored rope on the interior we bring this light art installation into the day while internal programmed LEDs reflect those colors in a looping animation at night. The rings blur the boundary of beginning and end, dusk and dawn, sleep and wake. The piece asks us to linger within the in-between where opposites might coexist.
