The Portland Gayborhood

Relocated to Shattuck Hall at PSU, this piece reveals the pivotal LGBTQ moments and places woven into the city’s history.

The Portland Gayborhood project brings LGBTQ+ history to life with illuminated light boxes placed at key downtown sites, forming a scavenger-hunt pathway between Pride Plaza and the future Darcelle XV Plaza. Each light box marks a building where an LGBTQ+ space once existed and features archival photos, news clippings, and brief narratives sourced from community members and the Umbrella Project. QR codes lead visitors to the next stop, creating a self-guided journey through the people, places, and culture that shaped Portland’s LGBTQ+ community.
