FOXLIGHT LABS

Foxlight Labs didn’t begin with light. It started with music.

When musicians James Sartor and Justin Kittell first set out to build a better music visualizer, they weren’t thinking about sculpture. They wanted to capture harmonies of sound and translate them into color. But the raw LEDs they wired up were so harsh that they cleared the room. That moment of “we need diffusion” became the foundation of everything they do today.

James brings his dual background in physics and music to Foxlight Labs, developing custom software that blends light and sound into multi-sensory experiences. Justin, an innovator with an eye for design, builds their works from the ground up, often using recycled materials to give new life to light. Together, they create installations that feel less like technology and more like living, breathing works of art.

Their pieces have stopped festival-goers in their tracks, including the crowd favorite Wish Vol. 1. What sets Foxlight apart is their ability to take something technical and make it feel deeply human, shaping light the way a musician shapes sound.

The Story of Infinity Crystals: A Light Sculpture Born from Sound

Infinity Crystals carries that vision forward. What began as a sketch of crystal clusters has evolved into a five-crystal illuminated sculpture with seamless mirrored surfaces, glowing color shifts, and warm hardwood accents. It is precise in its engineering yet deeply human, a reflection of Foxlight Labs’ mission to make light art feel alive.

Every angle shifts. Every glance changes the glow. Foxlight Labs describes it as triggering the “I must have it” impulse. It is a sensation so primal that people often stop in their tracks to admire it. Owning Infinity Crystals means bringing the best parts of the Portland Winter Light Festival into your own space, where the glow lasts year-round.

Like all PDXWLF installations, Infinity Crystals is more than an artwork; it represents the Festival’s mission to create immersive public art experiences that transform Portland each winter.

Why the Portland Winter Light Festival Holds a Raffle

Each year, the Portland Winter Light Festival launches with a raffle featuring a one-of-a-kind work of art created exclusively for the event. The raffle is a Festival tradition that extends the magic beyond the nine-night celebration in February, giving someone the rare chance to bring a piece of the Festival home.

This year, James and Justin created Infinity Crystals specifically for the raffle. One lucky winner will bring home this remarkable piece while supporting the Festival and stepping into the creative journey of two artists whose roots in music continue to shape the way they work with light.

Why It Matters to Portland and the Community

By entering the raffle, you are not just buying a ticket. You are supporting the creative work of artists like James and Justin, helping keep the Portland Winter Light Festival free and accessible for everyone in the community, and ensuring that light-based public art continues to brighten Portland’s winter nights.

🎟 Tickets: $50 for one, $75 for two, $100 for three. Purchase before October 17th.
