Photo of a polyhedron light sculpture Stoicheia

Stoicheia by Lilli Szafranski and Jesse Banks is an homage to Earth’s earliest thinkers, Plato and Euclid, merging modern technology with the very foundations of mathematics, and dedicating it to the culture from which modern academia was born. A perfect dodecahedron, each side depicts the iconography of one of the Twelve Olympians, the major deities of the Greek pantheon. Stoicheia is, at its core, one of the five Platonic Solids, elemental shapes prominent in the philosophies of Plato and further described in the most famous books in all of mathematics, Euclid’s “Elements.” Whimsical images, centered in a stained-glass rosary design, remain static and unchanging, while 2,000+ LEDs continuously morph and change, making every moment unique. Vibrantly-colored digital stained-glass, Stoicheia combines classic antiquity with the state-of-the-art technology through the common thread of mathematics and geometry.

Lilli Szafranski and Jesse Banks are Makers, in the truest sense. Each found their place in this world embracing the ever-evolving world of technology and engineering. Both are digital artists, expressing themselves through their respective forms; software and electronics. Using only math, and an eye for aesthetics they create stories with physical form.
