Photo of a glowing jellyfish sculpture Immersive Jelly

Ivan McLean enjoys making things that glow in the night. His Immersive Jelly is a suspended ring with over 21,000 feet of white nylon ribbon moving gracefully that feels great on the skin and changes color.

I was born and raised in Pt Reyes Station, California where I enjoyed the outdoors and raising animals which led me to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo where I received a degree in Farm Management. A stint in the Peace Corps was next in the Philippines as an ag extension type person, ie the crazy American who built his house on the hill, followed by living my dream of running around in the Australian outback on a motorcycle. Finding myself home again and not sure what to do, I started a welding shop in my parents garage building gates and fences, this led to furniture and before long, I, with a few friends, were selling to hundreds of stores across the country. Around 2007 I began shifting my focus to sculpture and haven’t looked back since and it seems each year the projects are bigger and more interesting, public, private and commercial utilizing all kinds of materials. Along the way I was able to marry my fellow Peace Corps Volunteer Michelle and together we’ve raised 3 wonderful daughters and remodeled 2 houses, one in the Mississippi Delta and our current home tucked in the woods of Portland, Or.

For the last 30 years I’ve owned and operated Ivan McLean Inc, first focusing on furniture and household accessories and now sculpture, stone, wood, glass and all types of metals. Over the years I’ve been lucky to work with great architects, landscape architects, designers, developers and collectors all over the country who have included my work in their homes and projects. Starting in late 2011 I began being represented by Sculpturesite Gallery in Glen Ellen, California and they’ve done a great job of spreading my work around the country. My shop is always open to visitors so please stop by for a visit when you’re in Portland.
