Michael Galen is a multi-disciplinary performance artist combining dance, percussion, music and lights. His musical specialties involve drum set, piano, and percussion, spanning the techniques and aesthetics of jazz, hip hop, soul, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian. Michael studied jazz performance at University of Oregon and percussion at University of Ghana-Legon. His independent study has blessed him with a plethora of masterful teachers on the west coast and in Brazil, to name a few: Mel Brown, Gary Hobbs, Jorge Alabé, Miguel Bernal, Tim Rapp. As a dancer, Michael excels in improvisation and choreography, specializing in hip hop and other club/street styles. He currently works with Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater as an innovative choreographer and performer, creating contemporary folklore. Recent notable work has been at universities in the NW, TEDxMtHood, What The Festival, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, as well as on TV with IFC’s Portlandia and Comedy Central. Michael is the co-founder of Brazilian soul band POPgoji. He regularly collaborates and teaches all around Portland, including at PCC and Ethos Music.
