Experiencing the Portland Winter Light Festival is as easy as showing up. We’ve provided answers to some of the most common questions we’ve been asked.

 

What is the Portland Winter Light Festival?

An outdoor celebration that illuminates Portland’s waterfront through contemporary light-based art installations, engaging performance and fun activities for all ages.

Where is the Festival located?

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and surrounding area on the Eastbank Esplanade, the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, surrounding Water Street locations and Zidell Yards across the Tilikum Bridge on the West Side of the River.

What if it snows or rains?

The festival will go on regardless of any inclement weather – snow, rain or freezing ice! Bundle up and bring your family and friends and join us!   

How can I get there?

We encourage everyone to take public transportation; TriMet and/or the Portland Streetcar, if possible. The Portland Streetcar is FREE on the nights of the Festival.  For those that need to drive, there is parking available for a charge. More information here.  

Is the festival free?

Yes!  But please be prepared to pay for parking or plan to take public transit (see above link)

What are the dates and hours of the event?

Wednesday, February 1 6PM – 10PM

Thursday, February 2 6PM – 10PM

Friday, February 3 6PM – 11PM

Saturday, February 4 6PM – 11PM

Will there be food?

Yes! At neighboring restaurants and food carts at the Festival.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes, this is an all ages event.  

Will OMSI be open?

The lobby, restrooms and Empirical Theater will be open all four nights of the Festival.  The Planetarium will be open Wednesday and Thursday for Festival Events.  Theory Restaurant, inside OMSI, will be open Wednesday through Friday from 5PM to 9PM.  The Museum is NOT open during the Festival.

What can I buy once I get there?

Food, Posters, Lighted Souvenirs

What should I wear?

Please dress warm, and prepare for rain, as this is an outdoor event.  

How can I enhance my experience?

Decorate yourself with lights;  Dress up your hat;  Attend a DIY Workshop beforehand;  Be a part of the Lantern Parade;  Join the Silent Disco; Experience the Art and Performances.
